Aspiring Young Food Photographer meets David Loftus
Our youngest category winner of 2013 was Joel Roane from Scotland for the age group 10 and under. There was much excitement in the room as Joel went to receive his award from David Loftus, one of the world's leading food photographers, particularly known for his work with Jamie Oliver for his cookery books.
When we asked Joel what first interested him in food photography we were absolutely thrilled to hear him say, 'I like taking photographs with my camera. It was this competition that got me interested in taking pictures of food so that I would be able to enter.'
Speaking of who inspires him Joel said, 'My mum, as she is the only photographer I know and takes me out with her to take photographs and teaches me how to use my camera.'
Joel lives in the Scottish countryside and loves taking pictures of the wild animals whenever he spots them and it was his image entitled 'Pheasant in Grass' which won him the Young Under 10's category and he describes by saying, 'I spotted this pheasant lying low in long grass, hoping not to become food! Luckily it got away with only being shot by my camera.'
The winning category image is seen below and as with all other finalist images was displayed at The Mall Galleries London in a five day exhibition open to the public.
If you are a keen young photographer looking to develop your interest in food photography why not check out our young categories page and consider entering for 2014, for all those under the age of 18 it is free to enter!
