Interview with photographer Cath Lowe

As the 2016 entry process gets underway and we await the arrival of new entries we took the time to speak to 2015 Pink Lady® Apple a Day category winner, Cath Lowe.

Cath's image 'Cricketer's Apple' (seen right) was shot in mid-winter in light rain she tells us. "I had the idea of how I wanted the apple to look, and then had to bribe my nine-year-old to don cricket whites and be my model."

Asked how she would best describe food photography as a field of work she said, "Fascinating, creative, all-consuming & often quite difficult  - though very rewarding when it all comes together. I am inspired by shapes, patterns, colours and extraordinary beauty in nature. And a big love of food! I live in South West London and have access to many different markets with a huge variety of international foods."

With this in mind we asked Cath to give us her top tips for London markets she loves to visit, "For inspiration, I often head down to Tooting High Street where I can find a myriad of wonderfully different fruit and vegetables, or spend time touring local Farmer's markets, or the great fish stall or delicatessens of Northcote Road, Clapham, for delicious looking food."

Wondering what the life of a food photographer is like? Here's what Cath's been doing recently! "I have just spent many days chopping big chunks of chocolate, grating bars & melting pots of chocolate to create some wonderful stylish & artisan images for a catalogue & website for a premium online chocolate company."

This was Cath's second year as a finalist of the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year and she can be seen receiving her award from Jay Rayner and Andy Macdonald below.
