Octopus on ice
Petra Novotna of the Czech Repubic was our 2016 Cream of the Crop Category Winner with her image ‘Octopus on ice’ a shot of fresh octopus on ice just with daylight which was product photography for a customer.
Technical: Canon EOS 6D, Tamron SP 24 - 70mm, F/2.8, Adobe Lightroom
Petra tells us, "The photo was taken for a client that sells fresh fish and seafood specialities. It was a big portfolio and a lot of images, but the picture of the octopus was my favourite from the start. I love the octopus structure and shape. With the wood it is a perfect connection I think."
How does it feel to be a Finalist for the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2016?
It's great ! I’m so happy, it makes my job more complete. I felt that my work has a greater sense.
Please tell us more about capturing your Finalist image. For example; what was happening around you, what inspired the shot, what time of day, challenges you had in capturing it.
The film was made in the morning daylight. Soft light created all the structures on octopus, ice and boards. I think that gave the picture a lot more depth.
I love food. I love cooking, that’s the reason why I started with food photography.
What are your thoughts on the cultural impacts of new smartphone apps on the photography sector? Positive, negative, no impact? Why?
I think smartphones have not effected photography. It’s the same as compact cameras. I think if you want to create a good picture, you need to know how to work with light and with a camera. You need know the principles of photography. It's not just about the device, it is possible with a phone to shoot a good photo, but the camera settings and good optics (lenses) allows you a lot more options.
David Loftus is my big ideal. I love his work, his photos are full of natural light.
What have you been working on since winning the category?
I have worked on several exciting projects including photography for cookbooks and a lot of work for clients who want to sell their food (or products) over the Internet. It is perfect, I am grateful that clients believe in me and I can do my work in my style and as best I can. I also love to take photos for myself, just for fun. I can be more artistic but still using lovely food with structure, colour and depth. Unfortunately I do not have as much time as I would like! My recent photos you can see on my Facebook page.
