TRAVEL TO EAT
Travel and food are intrinsically linked and earlier in 2015 we asked our Finalists, “How does travel & exploring a different culture influence your work?”, there were so many fantastic answers it was difficult to pick just one.

“It is the best thing there is and these days I "travel to eat". You are exposed to different cultures, new flavours, smells, textures and ways of cooking. I have just returned from Beirut and love telling people all about the food, tastes and experiences through my photography.”
Hein is from South Africa and his image ‘Semifreddo’ [Seen below left], an image of Passion Fruit Semifreddo with Frozen Dark Chocolate Sauce, was Highly Commended in our Food Bloggers category. He said of being a Finalist for the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2015, “Very exciting. It is such an honour to be included as a Finalist. It also offers a wonderful opportunity to look back at your body of work and see how far you have come.”
“I am very lucky to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town. It has a rich and diverse food heritage and vibrant food culture. The abundance of fresh produce, fantastic wines and beautiful natural scenery offers an endless playground for you to take your camera on a journey and to explore.”
How would you best describe food photography as a field of work?
“Delicious! And nobody warns you about all the dishes that needs to be washed. But it constantly inspires and you get to work with incredibly talented people who all share a love for food.”
Which photographers, if any, have most influenced your work?
I look at a lot of blogs and thanks to Pinterest I am exposed to many styles but I think the person who stands out is my friend and collaborator Francois Pistorius. I have learnt so much from him by being able to work with him and by just watching him work.
Can you tell us about what inspires you?
Beautiful food! And being able to work with incredibly talented people.
