Apple Day

This October, Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year celebrated #AppleDay with a 24-hour takeover of images from our Pink Lady® Apple a Day category.

On 21 October 2020, our 24-hour takeover shined a light on previous winners and highly commended images from the category. On the hour, every hour, we shared one of these wonderful images from over the last nine years of Pink Lady® Apple a Day.

Across these nine years, the category has delivered highly innovative and creative images of which our diverse panel of judges have appraised.

Our judges range from photographers and magazine editors, to creative directors and film directors, to food retailers and chefs. All of them touch food and photography in their professional life and have many years, even decades, of experience.

We invited some of our Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year global judges to share with us their favourite #AppleDay celebration.

Nicola Galloway is one of New Zealand’s top foodies, Award-winning Cookbook Author, Culinary Tutor & Food Photographer. Nicola's Homegrown kitchen won Best NZ Food Website '19.

Nicola, what is your favourite image and why?

“I love the natural lighting and how the apples are clearly the focus point but there is also more to the image to so create a story.”

What are you looking for in judging this year?

“As a judge for Pink Lady Food Photography I am drawn to images that stand out for the overall composition, with interesting lighting and angles, and not too (obviously) staged.”

Raneen Joudah, founder of Raneen’s Table, is a self-taught food enthusiast based in Saudi Arabia. Raneen combines food and art to offer a unique food blogging experience.

What is your favourite image, Raneen?

This is definitely my favourite. This photo is so simple, yet the execution is not. I love how the apple stands out in the image; the lighting is flawless. It captures they eye! And now i crave candied apple!’

Herman Lensing is the Food editor and Stylist for SARIE KOS magazine, South Africa. He is also a cookbook author and TV presenter.

To celebrate #AppleDay, Herman shared with us his favourite Pink Lady® Apple recipee - Pink Lady®-apple frangipane tart, showing us that Pink Lady® Apples can be photographed creatively throughout the cooking process too.
